7 Signs Your Small Business Network Needs an Upgrade
Most small business networks aren't designed. They accumulate: an ISP router here, a cheap switch there, a range extender for the back office. It works, until it doesn't. These are the signs we see most often in businesses that have outgrown their network, and what to do about each.

1. The Wi-Fi Drops or Has Dead Zones
Calls dropping in the back office, a card terminal that times out at the register, a conference room nobody can work in. Dead zones usually mean too few access points, or APs in the wrong places, not a slow internet plan. Our AP placement guide explains why.
2. Everything Slows Down at Busy Times
If the network is fine at 8 AM and crawls at 11, you've likely hit the limit of your router or access points, not your internet speed. Consumer gear is built for a handful of devices. A business with 20 staff, phones, printers and guests can easily have 75+ connected devices.
3. You're Still Using the ISP's Router
The box your internet provider installed is designed to be cheap and easy, not secure or manageable. It typically can't segment networks properly, has limited firewall controls, and gets firmware updates on the ISP's schedule, if at all.
4. Guests, Cameras and Staff Share One Network
If the guest Wi-Fi, security cameras, POS system and office computers are all on the same network, one compromised device can reach everything. Separating them with VLANs and a proper firewall is one of the highest-impact security improvements a small business can make. See our 12 network security tips.
5. Nobody Knows the Admin Password
"The guy who set it up" left years ago, and nobody can log in to the router or the switch. That means nobody is applying security updates, and when something breaks, it can't be fixed quickly. If you can't manage your own network, you don't really control it.
6. The Equipment Is 5+ Years Old
Older hardware often stops getting security patches, and older Wi-Fi standards (Wi-Fi 5 and earlier) struggle with today's device counts. If your access points predate Wi-Fi 6, an upgrade usually brings a noticeable speed and reliability jump.
7. You're Growing
New hires, a second location, an expanded space, cameras or door access on the roadmap. Growth is the best time to fix the foundation, because adding to a shaky network multiplies the problems.
What an Upgrade Actually Looks Like
For most small businesses, a modern network means a business-grade gateway with a real firewall, a PoE switch, enough access points for full coverage, and separate networks for staff, guests and devices. Platforms like UniFi make this affordable, with no monthly license fees. Here's what UniFi installation typically costs.
You don't have to replace everything at once. A good assessment tells you what to fix first, and what can wait.
